An officer on patrol near the intersection of Hoyt Street and Woodway Road at approximately 9 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 1 spotted a BMW driving at approximately 55 mph in a posted 30 mph zone. When the vehicle passed the officer on Hoyt Street, one of the headlamps fell off, and a traffic stop was conducted.
Officers made contact with the driver, Stamford resident Robert Dockham, 33, who had the smell of alcohol on his breath and was slurring his speech. Police said that Dockham “appeared to be confused by the interaction,” and admitted to consuming alcohol prior to the stop.
According to police, officers inspected Dockham's vehicle and found fluid leaking and what appeared to be fresh damage to the front end of the BMW. Dockham denied being in an accident, and investigators noted that no surrounding jurisdictions received a report of a recent hit-and-run when they were contacted.
Dockham proceeded to fail multiple Standardized Field Sobriety Tests and he was placed under arrest. At Darien police headquarters, Dockham went on to decline taking a breathalyzer and he was charged with driving under the influence, and cited for speeding and no headlamps. Dockham was released on $250 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, Feb. 14 to answer the DUI.
